How To Perfectly Install Carpet Tiles
The tools for the job
You just need a few basic tools to lay carpet tiles;
- a tape measure
- a metal ruler
- a fixed blade utility knife
- double-sided tape (or carpet glue if your tiles have no adhesive).
You’ll also need some household appliances such as a vacuum cleaner and a mop to prepare the floor.
What surfaces can carpet tiles be placed on?
Before you begin, it’s useful to know which types of flooring you can lay carpet tiles on. There are plenty of surfaces that you can install on, including vinyl, laminate, tile, concrete, plywood or hardwood floors. Just make sure that any existing flooring is dry, solid and secure before you begin. There’s no need for underlay with carpet tiles, as long as the floor is dry, clean and level.
How to install your carpet tiles
Step 1: Get started by cleaning the floor
Use your vacuum cleaner to clean up any dirt and dust from the surface, before wiping it all down with a mop. This will ensure there’s no problem spots when you come to lay tiles. When the floor has dried, you can move on to the installation.
Step 2: Measure up the room
Measure one corner of the room to the centre and mark it. Using chalk, draw a line along the centre to the other side of the room, and repeat the process so that you have two intersecting lines to the centre of the room.
Step 3: Lay the first tiles
Your carpet tiles should have arrows on the back to tell you which direction it’s facing. Make sure to keep them all facing the same direction when you lay them, so your floor has a uniform design. To begin the installation, lay four tiles in each quadrant of the cross you’ve drawn in the middle of the room. Check that they all fit properly before sticking them down with the adhesive.
Step 4: Lay the rest of the tiles
With the rest of the tiles, work your way out to the edges of the room from the four in the middle. Work on one quadrant at a time. Each tile should snugly fit against the next. If there is a gap once you get to the edges, measure it and cut a tile with your utility knife to fill it in.
Step 5: Stick the tiles down
If your tiles have an adhesive backing, peel this off and press each tile into the floor, starting from the centre again. Use double-sided tape or carpet glue if your tiles don’t have an adhesive backing. Repeat this process the same way as before, one quadrant at a time, until all are stuck down.
